Personally I would have liked a bit more action. This book focuses mainly on training (which is okay seeing as it is the first book of the series) and has a fairly short battle in the last chapter. Another thing I would have liked to see more off are battle scenes. I would have liked to have seen a few more real historical moments, but I am sure these will come later in the series. She captured the time this was set in incredibly well and created a believable and well-developed world.

The female characters on the other hand were very strong and awesome.īecause that is something Novik has done very well. However, one can argue that this is how men during that time thought. I wasn’t too pleased about his reaction to the first female captain he saw, and his shock when he saw a woman with a scar (woman shouldn’t be in war cause they might get hurt or damaged) or when another woman told how she threw a cup of hot coffee in a man’s lap after he made her feel uncomfortable with some very inappropriate remarks (that’s no way for a lady to act) pissed me off slightly. However, he was a bit close minded at times, especially when it came to woman.

He is a true gentleman and stands up for what is right, not caring too much about what other people think about his criticism and sometimes harsh ways. The huge diversity of dragons in this book definitely hit my sweet spot and was in my opinion very well done. He is so cute, and his friendship with Laurence (although it developed in my opinion way too strong way too fast) was very nice and heartwarming. Temeraire was an exceptionally interesting ‘character’, with his wisdom and views on the world. They are not ridden by just one man, but by a dozen, strapped into a complex harness perfectly suited for air battles and warfare. This story portrays dragons in a way which is very unique and new for me. This was a light and fun read, with a few very strong parts.
