It's really important he keeps his grandeur. We can go to the weirder parts of the mythos surround Vader with other people who take up other roles, so that you don't diminish Vader. The problem with doing another book about Vader on a Star Destroyer is that it's just a bunch of faceless space fascists. He has a knowledge of that world, so this Vader is kind of the figure that gets involved in a seedier side of things. Vader is a hilarious micro-manager - there's no way he should be briefing bounty hunters! he knows Boba Fett is prone to disintegrations and has to tell him not to do it. One of my favourite things watching Empire is the scene with the bounty hunters. Clearly, Vader doesn't like that, which leads to more than a few things. Pretty much every area of his life has him living in someone else's shadow. Other people are more ascendant than he is.

What's your take on Vader as a character? It's fundamentally a story about a bad guy becoming a worse guy, but it's meant to be like House of Cards - both the UK original and the American remake - where it's about a guy in power who gets slighted and starts using tactics he'd never had used before to get his own back. So it's the fall and rise of Darth Vader, the guy at the end of Star Wars becoming the guy at the beginning of Empire. He's the only survivor of military rank, so he has to be the scapegoat. He's the one most responsible for the destruction of the Death Star by letting the plans get away - on purpose. The callousness that Vader treats people with is different, as is the power he displays when he fights. We noticed that Vader is much less vicious in Star Wars than he is in Empire. Where will your series fit into that continuity? Our story starts after New Hope and will go on to Empire. It's not that I'm writing the whole Marvel Universe I'm writing Loki, or the X-Men. I'm working in a very small part of it, like how when I'm writing for Marvel. There'll be this level of consistency that's never been done before in a universe of this scale. They can say that actually there's something similar in this other book. The flip of it is that I can come to them with a story - this is a hypothetical - where I could say I've got this idea for a ministry or some other organization. They're very interesting to work with because it's like punching back and forth, asking 'can I do this?' and they answer yes or no. There's no doubt about what's 'true' anymore ĭarth Vader will be here at this time, doing this thing. story group and their task is very focussed - it's like this meta-myth and all the stories will be canon in a way they never were before. It's a very brave move that no-one's really done before.
